Biographical Text

John Burnet was a Greek scholar from Edinburgh. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he studied Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit. He had a short stay at the College de France and was a residence at Oxford and Balliol College in 1883. He left Oxford in 1887 but entered into another residence at Merton College in 1888. He then held a temporary teaching position in St Andrews in 1890-91 and was elected as professor of Greek in 1891 and remained in this position until his retirement.

Contribution

Several important contributions to Classical scholarship including a critical edition of the whole works of Plato in the Oxford Classical Texts and a book called 'early greek philosophy'
