<text>John Napier (1550 - 1617 ) was a Scottish mathematician, physicist and astronomer. At the age of 13, he began his studies at the Saint Salvator's college of the University of St Andrews. He contributed a lot to Mathematics, by developing the concept of logarithms, a very useful tool for modern Applied Mathematics, and by inventing a calculating device, called Napier's bones. Moreover, in 1616 his book Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio was published, which included his theorems for Spherical Geometry, called Napier's Rules of Circular Parts. Napier is also famous for establishing the use of the dot (.) to distinguish the integer from the decimal part of decimal numbers.
