Garrett overcame initial disapproval by her father to obtain a medical education, although she faced a raft of difficulties along the way. <p>In 1862, she became the first woman to matriculate at the University of St Andrews, with the support of some of the medical professors and Vice Chancellor John Tulloch of St Mary’s. However, the senatus prohibited her entrance to the university.
