She matriculated at University College, Dundee and the University of St Andrews School, where she graduated and obtained her medical degree in 1920. Following this, she joined the staff at the Dundee Royal Infirmary, eventually becoming head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1936. Anecdotal evidence suggests that this appointment displeased at least one male colleague. She then fought for 4 years to become a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, eventually winning her battle in 1940 to become Scotland’s first female professor.
