<text>Louisa Lumsden was a Scottish pioneer of female education born on December 31st, 1840, in Aberdeen. Lumsden was the founding headmistress of St Leonards School in St Andrews, which was the first school for girls in Scotland modelled after English public schools. She was extremely enthusiastic at the location of the school, which she thought provided an opportunity to attend a first-rate school without having to travel to England.

<p>Lumsden returned to St Andrews in 1895 as founder and first warden of University Hall, the first purpose-built hall of residence for women in Scotland.
