Welcome to ‘The Open, The University’, a celebration of The Open Championship in the University town of St Andrews. Almost all of the images within this exhibition are taken from the Special Collections Division of the University and represent a golf photography collection that ranges from 1839 to 1993. However the relationship between golf and the University dates back to the early 15th century with the University being founded in 1410 and golf being first recorded around the same time – perhaps students were among the first players of the game?

The aim of this exhibition is to demonstrate the significance of the University within the town and further afield while emphasising the ongoing relationship between the institution and the game of golf. In essence; the goal is to raise awareness of the fact that St Andrews is not only the ’Home of Golf’ but also the ‘Home of Scotland’s First University’.
