Domestic Artefacts
Meet the collection: Domestic Finds
The Bridges collection includes a number of facinating everyday objects which lend insight into the way in which domestic life was carried out. This includes artefacts such as loom weights, drop spindles and lamps.
Spindle Whorls
Spindle whorls were a means of spinning the thread to be used for textiles. Material such as wool is spun through a method called drop spinning, teasing the fibres of the wool quite thin and twisting the spindle whorl simultaneously, using the weight of the spindle whorls (like the ones in our collection) to twist the wool fibres into a thread, like this.
